from the inside out.
I was born and raised in Fernie, BC and grew up figure skating at the local arena, though I also participated in various other sports growing up. Throughout my skating career, I was a Regional, Provincial, Western Canadian, and Canadian Gold Medalist; I represented BC at the BC Winter Games, the Canada Winter Games, and was on the Olympic Development Team in 2010. I also skated professionally with Disney On Ice prior to beginning my undergraduate and graduate studies.
What's interesting, and probably most surprising, about my background is that even during the peak of my career, I was not healthy. From stress fractures in my hip and low back, head injuries resulting in chronic post-concussion syndrome, multiple surgical consults and too many medications, I was in constant pain with seemingly no long-term solutions other than quitting competitive sport. However, for a 14 year old, that's not really an option.
From that point on, I started listening to my body, some days better than others, and I began to trust in myself, my intuition, and my body's ability to heal without drugs or surgery. Thus began my personal journey into holistic healthcare and natural / alternative medicines as well as pursuing a career in the health sciences.
If I am not in the clinic, you can often find me running or biking the trails around town with my family. I also enjoy working with local athletes on and off the ice, as well as teaching spin and yoga at various studios around town.
I am constantly learning and am currently pursing further education and training in functional medicine so I can continue to learn additional ways in which I can help facilitate healing for my patients from the inside out.
Of course I was skeptical, but I didn't have anything else to lose, so I went all in. Turns out, we're not just a bunch of body parts, but rather a collection of parts making up a whole person and falling on your butt 20+ times a day can alter your biomechanics and create compensatory patterns, which leads to injuries over time. Once we figured out where the source of my pain was coming from, it took less than 2 weeks of treatment before I was back on the ice with little to no pain at all. What was even more exciting was that my timing was better on the ice, which meant I was performing better. This all makes perfect sense to me now because when your brain and body communicates better, everything else works more effectively.
